Clothing and Equipment

Mandatory Requirements

The Downs Light Railway is a fully working light railway. Youth members physically participate in the maintenance and operation of the railway. As such, it is unavoidable that youth members will be exposed to operational risks. To mitigate certain risks, youth members must be appropriately clothed and equipped otherwise they cannot take part.
CE or UKCA approved garments must only be bought. We recommend that any safety related item of clothing or equipment is not purchased second-hand unless it has been inspected and conditioned by a suitably experienced individual.

Please contact us if you have any questions, need advice or help.

Body Protection

Inherent fire retardant (FR) and anti-static coveralls must be worn by all youth members and adult volunteers.
Coveralls made of polyester and other synthetic fibres can increase the exposure to hazards. The Downs Light Railway Trust is the exclusive stockist of FR coveralls for childen.

Please contact us if you need to buy a set of coveralls.

Hand Protection

Appropriate safety gloves for each activity must be worn by all youth members and adult volunteers.

Essential Standards

Rigging Gloves

We recommend all youth and adult members have a pair of rigging gloves. These are applicable to most activities from track work, manually moving rolling stock, and driving the locomotives.

Recommended Protection Ratings
  • Abrasion Resistance - Level 3
  • Cut Resistance - Level 1
  • Tear Resistance - Level 3
  • Puncture Resistance - Level 3

Nitrile Tipped Engineering Gloves

We recommend experienced youth members and adult volunteers engaging in railway maintenance activities have a pair of general engineering gloves. These minimise dexterity restrictions required for handling components and fixings, while providing resistance from oils and sharp objects.

Recommended Protection Ratings
  • Abrasion Resistance - Level 4
  • Cut Resistance - Level 1
  • Tear Resistance - Level 2
  • Puncture Resistance - Level 2

General Clothing Common Sense

The Downs Light Railway is generally an outdoor activity. Youth members must come appropriately dressed for the weather conditions expected throughout the activity session. Our safety clothing specifically uses fabrics that are fire retardant. Enhanced protection is gained from the undergarments to coveralls and footwear. Please ensure that your children are not wearing plastic fabrics such as polyester.

Is there a chance it will rain?

  • Please ensure your child has a suitable waterproof coat with them.

Is the temperature going to be hot?

  • Please ensure your child has clothing layers that can be removed if they get too hot.
  • Please ensure your child has a suitable hat to protect them from the sun.

Is the temperature going to be cold or a strong wind?

  • Please ensure your child has sufficient clothing layers. It is always better to shed layers if they are too hot, than insufficient layers to keep warm.
  • Please ensure your child has a suitable hat to keep their head warm and protected from wind chill.
